Poas Volcano TourPoas VolcanoPoas is a stratovolcano with several eroded calderas, cones, and two crater lakes at or near its summit. Poas has erupted at least 39 times since 1828 and is in state of nearly continuous mild activity.
Volcan Poas is one of the most visited volcanoes in Costa Rica, because of its proximity to San Jose and because of the luxuriant forest that surrounds the two craters. One of the craters measures 1.5 kilometers in diameter (0.9 miles) and is 300 meters deep (900 feet). The park measures 5600 hectares, and this basaltic volcano stands at an altitude of 2708 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level.
The mountain is composed by composite basalt. Because of toxic sulphuric acid fumes, visitors are prohibited from descending into the crater, but the view down from the top is very impressive. Poas’ second crater lake, Laguna Botos, is located a short trail to the south. Botos Lagoon is a filled-up crater in the Parque Nacional Volcan Poas. Its deep blue waters contrast with the dense tropical forest that surround it.
